Most everyone knows about the benefits of massage, and for a performance horse, the benefits are particularly clear. To begin with, massage reduces stress and creates a general sense of well being that helps horses perform better. It also increases blood and lymph circulation, which helps horses recover from soreness and injuries faster by circulating waste away from muscles and bringing oxygen in.

Those are the key physical effects, but you shouldn’t ignore one other benefit. Massaging your horse puts you more in touch with him. It reveals when one or more of his muscles are tight and more prone to injury, and gives you the ability to prevent a muscle condition from developing into an injury.

That’s why it’s important for every rider and performance-horse owner to know the basics of massage for horses.

What You’ll Learn

In this series of three videos, noted equine massage expert Key Burns will introduce you to a basic massage routine for horses. She’ll walk you through a step-by-step process for working a horse through:

Head and neck massage

Shoulder and body massage

Hind end massage

Applied skillfully, the techniques she demonstrates can help you make sure your horse remains a healthy, more capable, more relaxed performer.

Help Your Horse Feel Good, Avoid Injuries and Perform Well

Only experienced equestrians who know how to work around horses safely should conduct the massage exercises shown in this lesson.

However, even if you’re not yet ready to perform these techniques yourself, this video will show you how simple it is to execute a good massage routine and what it can do for your horse. Then you’ll be in a much better position to recognize when your horse needs his muscles massaged by a professional, and more able to help him become the relaxed, capable performer he should be.

Just click an Add to Cart button below to purchase, download and view your videos. Within minutes, you’ll see how easy it is to help your horse feel better and perform to the limits of his capabilities.

Many riders maintain their passion for equestrian competition throughout their lives, even if it means returning to the sport after taking decades off to raise families and build careers. However, some returning riders find they don’t approach competitive riding the same as they did as youngsters.

They’re a little stiffer in the joints and quicker to get sore. Using their arms and legs in certain ways over decades has made them unsymmetrical in both body conformation and their natural movements (e.g. less supple in one direction of the ring, just like their horses). Moreover, they often aren’t as comfortable taking some level of perceived risk (e.g. riding faster or dropping their stirrups) to advance their riding skills.

The exercises that Tim demonstrates in this video are designed to overcome some of these barriers and help you become a stronger, more physically capable person in the process. These exercises will help any rider, but are especially useful to riders needing to improve their body positioning, become more fluid in the saddle and find ways to work through their cautious approach to riding.

What You’ll Learn

This lesson will show you how to:

Perform exercises in the saddle that help you get into a good position in the saddle, loosen up your body and make it easier for you to maintain a good frame in both directions of the ring

Develop your ability to sit comfortably in the saddle at the trot and canter without incurring soreness and back discomfort

Improve your evenness, and your horse’s, in both directions of the ring

Acclimate yourself gradually to increasing and controlling speed at various gaits

These are the kinds of exercises that can accelerate your development and help you break through developmental plateaus.

Every Arabian horse trainer and breeder should have a complete set of the “Standards of Excellence” videos produced by the Arabian Horse Association. These videos explain and demonstrate the judging criteria used to define success in the Arabian show ring. They’re invaluable tools for anyone involved in breeding, selecting or training horses for multiple divisions.

In truth, many more Arabian horse owners and riders should own all six of the following videos in the series, even if they compete primarily in a single division:

Standards of Excellence in the English Divisions

Standards of Excellence in the Hunter Divisions

Standards of Excellence in Western Pleasure

Standards of Excellence in the Show Hack Division

Standards of Excellence in the Halter Divisions

Standards of Excellence in the Showmanship Division

That’s because broad knowledge and understanding of the Arabian breed and judging criteria can help any Arabian enthusiast become a much better horseman and decision-maker. It can help you judge the quality and potential of any given horse, make better decisions about which classes to compete in and appreciate competition in divisions other than your own.

There’s no better way to gain this knowledge and understanding than through these videos. They represent the best available training, as produced by the Arabian Horse Association’s Education & Evaluation Commission.

You may, of course, acquire any one of the videos individually as well. View the descriptions that follow on this page to get a much more detailed idea of the material presented in each one.

Get All Six Videos at a Discount

Just click an Add to Cart button below to purchase, download and view all six of the videos in this series. Within minutes, you’ll learn more about what your goals should be as you work with your horses at home and take them into the show ring, and you’ll develop a much greater appreciation of the Arabian horse and its versatility.

These are videos you should return to time and again, if only to keep fresh in your mind how Arabian horses and riders should perform ideally. They will give you overall pictures of how riders and their horses should look in the show ring and also remind you of many of the specific details judges take into consideration as they watch these horses and riders perform.

Because these videos are in the form of downloads to your computer, it will also be easy for you to take them with you wherever you go, even to shows. You can even convert them for use on a smart phone or other mobile device, so that you can watch, or just listen to what judges are looking for, as you come closer to an especially important class.

Updated with new footage in 2010, this video explains and demonstrates the Arabian Horse Association’s standards of excellence for English divisions. These standards provide a foundation for the education of Arabian judges in the association’s judge-training programs and, by extension, provide guidelines to trainers, riders and breeders for success in the show ring.

If you’re an Arabian English rider, trainer, breeder or aspiring judge, you’ll find this training video to be an invaluable resource — a must-have tool, really. Viewing it is the best way to see exactly what constitutes success for English horses and saddle-seat riders in the Arabian show ring.

What You’ll Learn

The focus of this particular video is the explanation and demonstration of standards for the Arabian and Half-Arabian English divisions, including:

Country English Pleasure

Country Pleasure Driving

English Pleasure

Pleasure Driving

Park

After providing a brief introduction to the origins of English riding styles, this program shifts its focus to explaining just what constitutes good movement and balance in all Arabian and Half-Arabian English horses. It then describes what tack and rider appointments are suitable for English divisions.

With this introductory material covered, it then proceeds through each of the five major English disciplines, describing standards for excellence and showing the best available examples of successful horses and riders. Most of the video footage is of top trainers taking the best Arabian English horses in the country to winning performances in national championship classes.

Then it runs through a much more detailed review of judging criteria for showmanship (60% of score, based on things such as leading, showing, poise, alertness and attitude) and presentation (40% of score, based on things such as horse condition, grooming and appointments).

Following this discussion of judging criteria, it provides a review of general rules for showmanship, class conduct (procedures), attributes for which exhibitors are to be credited (e.g. performance, control, attentiveness, style), fourteen specific faults that detract from exhibitor scores or cause disqualification, and a few demonstrations of tests.

What makes this video especially useful is that, as the narrator describes each of these things in detail, you can watch video footage of exhibitors performing to AHA standards.
